Rumble Strips – What’s Your Opinion?

In recent weeks Caltrans has installed center line rumble strips on rural roads — Highway 84 heading to the coast, Niles Canyon, Highway 9 from Saratoga to Skyline, and Hecker Pass near Gilroy.

If you want to express your opinion about the strips, there’s a survey on the Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition website.

The National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP)  has an in-depth report on rumble strips. There’s only anecdotal mention of their affect on bicyclists.

I’m ambivalent at this point. On my rides I haven’t had any issues. What I haven’t done is drive a car and pass cyclists when there’s a rumble strip. Before passing judgment, that’s something that needs to be experienced.
